VANDALS STRIKE PERSHING FIELDS
Fires set to artificial turf at Pershing Middle School sports field complex

About 1:00 yesterday afternoon (Monday, December 18, 2006) unnamed individuals began setting six fires that melted portions of the artificial turf at Pershing Middle School sports field complex.  Burning flames were not visible because the artificial material melts.  Fortunately a City Park and Recreation Department employee arrived on site for routine maintenance, and quickly extinguished a spot on the field that was melting.

The City employee immediately called the Park and Recreation Manager for the area, Manny Aranda, who in turn called the police, my office and in turn we called Mrs. Sullivan, the principal at Pershing.  All parties arrived within minutes, including city and school police; Scott Hillier, vice principal of Pershing; Dan Rubin, executive director of Crusaders Soccer Club; Carlos Cordova, manager of the Allied Gardens Recreation Center; and Jay Wilson of my office.  A total of 6 areas were burned ranging from 8 inches to 18 inches in diameter.

It appears a ball of yarn soaked in lighter fluid was used to start each of the six damaged areas.  When the blob of burned yarn was located, it was still warm to the touch.

Repairing the damaged fields is quite expensive and we certainly hope to apprehend the individuals responsible for this despicable act.

Jesus Montana, the investigating police officer for the school district, urges anyone who may have knowledge of this vandalism to contact the San Diego Unified School Police Dept. at (619) 291-7678 or call the anonymous tip line at Crime Stoppers at (888) 580-TIPS.

Thank you,

Jim.

Thanks to Jay Wilson of my staff for the photos.
