Dear Friend:

Very likely, each one of us remembers exactly where we were when America was attacked the morning of September 11, 2001.

First and foremost, our thoughts and prayers go out to the families and friends of those whose lives were so tragically lost, and to the many heroes who worked tirelessly in the aftermath.  The heroic acts of our first responders serve as an inspiration and as a reminder of the critical role our fire fighters, police and other first responders play and the pressures they and their families face every day. Today we are also reminded how we must make sure these essential employees are trained, ready and strong.

One thing is for certain: we as a people are still targeted.  While the bumper stickers, flag draped vehicles and freeway bridges have long faded away for most, the threat to our homeland and to Americans is stronger than ever.

Today is a day of reflection and remembrance.  It’s a day to count our blessings and a day to remind all of us that we must remain vigilant.

Moving Forward for a Better Quality of Life

I’m looking forward to several upcoming events in District 7. They are important accomplishments in my goal of improving the quality of life for our neighbors.  I love San Diego.  It is my hometown and I want to do all that I can to improve our neighborhoods.  From big projects to smaller projects, each one is an indication of my commitment to our communities that I’m working on their behalf. As I said before, my guiding principle is to get things done for my communities. Working closely with community leaders, we’ve been extremely successful in checking off things from our “to-do” list.  I want to tell you about a few projects coming to closure and invite you to celebrate with us.

Mini Dorm Madness

Recently we’ve seen a proliferation of mini dorms. That is a name for housing, typically a house in a single-family home neighborhood that has multiple college students or other non-related individuals residing in this one house. Certainly college students may not have many options when it comes to affordable places to live.  And property owners who want to rent their single family homes to people are well within their rights.  However, it becomes a problem when factors arising from mini dorm conditions have a negative impact on the community and the quality of life is diminished. These issues include multiple cars belonging to one residence, noise problems, more trash and litter, and lower standards of upkeep for the house and property.

In District 7, the College Area surrounding San Diego State University has been impacted. However, this is a city-wide issue that impacts communities surrounding local institutions of higher learning.

On Tuesday, September 19th I am hosting a Town Hall meeting to address this issue. Elected officials, community leaders, representatives of San Diego State University and City of San Diego staff will provide their expertise.  Please attend and provide your comments and suggestions as we explore viable solutions.

The Mini Dorm Town Hall Meeting begins at 7:00 p.m. on September 19th at the College Avenue Baptist Church located at 4747 College Avenue. Click here

Pole Out Event

We’re continuing to make progress in achieving our goals in the San Carlos area. As far as I’m concerned, the City of San Diego is not moving fast enough in moving overhead utility lines underground. However, we are making progress and another milestone in marking that progress takes place later this month. Please join me on Thursday, September 21 at 10:00 a.m. as we celebrate the completion of placing overhead utility lines underground on Lake Shore Drive.  The ceremony will take place at 6274 Lake Shore Drive. It is part of our overall neighborhood improvement and beautification program.

We removed 2,404 feet of overhead utility lines from Jackson Drive to the La Mesa city limit. This affected 55 customers who are very pleased with the results not to mention thousands more who travel on Lake Shore Drive annually.  We’ll have a brief ceremony and then remove the very last utility pole at this special “pole out” event.  For more information, call my office at (619) 236-6677.

Antigua Median

This is a case of style and substance. The style is how nice Antigua Boulevard in Tierrasanta looks especially with plants and landscaping being installed. The substance is that this median continues along the stretch in front of Kumeyaay Elementary School providing an additional element of safety along this busy street.

The community was excited to see the project begin in December of last year.  There was a bit of delay as construction transitioned to the landscaping phase.  Residents have seen rapid progress in the past three weeks as the contractor installed meters and equipment for the landscaping and is now finishing up planting flowers and other plants selected by Tierrasanta community leaders.

I invite you to join us on Thursday, October 19th at 9:00 a.m. for the ribbon-cutting ceremony.  We’ll meet near Kumeyaay School located at 6475 Antigua Boulevard.  It will be a great event.

DePortola Comfort Station

This fall we’ll celebrate the grand opening of the De Portola Comfort Station.  If you haven’t frequented a youth sports field, then the term “comfort station” may be new for you. It is a community structure, sometimes a joint-use project that houses a snack bar, sports storage area and public restroom for youth sports teams such as soccer and Little League games. We built a comfort station at Lake Murray Community Park and it was instantly popular with the community. Now Tierrasanta will have a similar comfort station located on the ball fields beside Gaspar de Portola Middle School. I’ll let you know the date as soon as it is scheduled.

Jacaranda Bowl

In a previous issue of my eNewsletter I talked about the beautiful Jacaranda Bowl on Waring Road at the entrance to Allied Gardens. Over the years many people have donated their time and efforts to make this patch of beauty something the community can be proud of.  I was remiss in failing to specifically mention the Allied Gardens Community Council, especially their beautification committee, for their commitment and hard work. We are so pleased that they have been actively involved in making the Jacaranda Bowl such a pleasant sight and recognize their efforts. A big thank you to the Allied Gardens Community Council and all who have volunteered their time to make the Jacaranda Bowl so very special.

Happenings in the District

From time to time I include a few community events taking place throughout the District. Here's one you may be interested in:

September 30 – The 1965 movie classic "Sound of Music" staring Julie Andrews will be shown on Saturday, September 30th at 7:30 on the giant outdoor screen at the Allied Gardens Community Park.  Bring the whole family, a blanket, low back chairs and enjoy this outstanding family movie.

Refreshments will be sold by the Allied Gardens Recreation Council to benefit their Youth Volleyball Program.

The movie is presented FREE by Don Brennan and MME Event Productions.
