Dear Friend:

As many of you know, I was on the losing end of a San Diego City Council vote that sought to donate the Mt. Soledad Memorial and cross to the Federal Government.  The vote was 5-3 to remove the cross.  Many of us were very disappointed with the prospect of losing the Mt. Soledad Cross and War Memorial, which has stood in one form or another atop Mt. Soledad since the early 1900s.

Undeterred, a group of outstanding citizens have begun circulating a referendum petition that directs the City Council to reverse its decision.  I am joining them in their efforts.

In an effort to maintain the integrity of the Mt. Soledad War Memorial, which includes its historic 43-foot cross, "San Diegans for the Mt. Soledad National War Memorial" have officially launched a referendum drive to block the San Diego City Council's March 8th resolution "declining to accept the offer of the United States Government to accept transfer of title to the Mt. Soledad Memorial property."

You can help us in our cause.  If enough signatures are gathered, the matter would return to the City Council for action with one of two choices:  Either rescind the vote or place the matter on the ballot for the people to decide.

Naturally, it is my hope and prayer that the City Council would simply rescind its vote against the memorial and instead vote to donate the property to the Federal Government, as it should have done in the first place.  The Department of Interior would take over the Veteran's Memorial and additional Federal legislation could be passed that would direct the department to allow the Mt. Soledad Association to continue its existing program at the memorial.

You can join the referendum campaign by signing a petition (if you are registered to vote in the CITY of San Diego).  It’s as easy as clicking this link to print a PDF version of the petition.  Only registered voters in the CITY of San Diego may sign the petition.  If you’d like to help, please print as many as you can.  Petitions must be returned by April 4, 2005.  Complete instructions are at the San Diegans for the Mt. Soledad National War Memorial website (click here).

I realize there may be a few folks who do not agree with my position to save the Mt. Soledad War Memorial and I respect that.  I have always stated my support for the Mt. Soledad Cross and War Memorial.  It is a symbol that honors the many who have served our nation.  As a lifelong San Diegan, I will continue to do everything I can to preserve this important piece of San Diego history and all that it stands for.
